To date, Tim Nelson has spent a total of 26,600 hours coaching engineers to solve complex technical problems using a methodology called Red X®. During these hours, he has also coached the CEOs and presidents of Delphi Technologies and Lockheed Martin, respectively. In addition to the Red X® method, Tim has supported Six Sigma, and Robust Design Engineering  while certifying over 2000 engineers.

Our second guest is Billie Flynn, a real ‘Top Gun’ pilot who flew Lockheed Martin‘s F-35 Lightning II for its first demonstration at the world renown Paris Air Show. Billie joins Tim to further describe their collaboration on solving identified technical issues with the F-35

For reference, Lockheed Martin is the largest defense contractor in the world, and their F-35 program is considered by many to be the most technically complicated project in the world. In light of Tim’s innovative approach to problem solving, he was assigned to fix a complex technical problem within the F35, the largest program in military history.

A former VP of Quality at Lockheed Martin noted that Tim and Billie closed 65 projects, contributing to $1B in savings and certifying 84 engineers.  What makes this collaboration even more exceptional is that Tim is dyslexic. Often, a dyslexic’s greatest strength is creating ingenious compensation strategies to solve complex problems.

“I don’t know how I do it. The cocoon is the death to a caterpillar and the life of the butterfly; I don’t understand that process either. I do understand I start with a problem and turn it into a gift,” Tim says.

Inventor in his own right of Creative Logic™ (an innovative synergy-based process which  pairs creative and logical individuals for productively positive results), Tim Nelson emphasizes this sentiment: “Many people associate dyslexia with a stigma, a brand or tattoo. A person is not a brand or tattoo; no more than is [someone’s] color, gender, or sexual preference.

Parents want their child to conform and be like everyone else’s child. This environment must change if we expect to get the best out of people.”
