Rasha Alomar is a Raw Materials and Sustainability Specialist. Part of her job is to stay on top of market trends and identify opportunities and changes in the market. She researches and develops many areas but the closest to her heart is sustainability.
Rasha strongly believes in the power of partnerships and frequently meets with factories, mills, chemical and fiber companies’ and is constantly aware of the latest developments. She makes a point of attending all tradeshows, lectures, and multiple conferences. During her journey she grew to understand the importance of sustainability on a personal and business level.
“This inspired me to keep learning and increasing my knowledge. I was attracted to the collaborative world approach and realized even though we are in a sustainable crisis it is possible to create a better more connected world by the collaboration through this cause. I also was aware that sustainability is simply good business, as any other choice has high possible business risk factors going forward,” Alomar said.
Keeping a combination of the sustainable cause, goals and realistic pricing and sourcing Rasha proceeded to put together a plan of action. Part of her initiative was to identify all relevant fibers that are sustainable in the market. She approached core mills to identify what fibers they carry and what the cost structure was. Rasha sourced and allocated additional mills where needed. She allocated gold and budget standards for all categories. This way there was something for every price point from high end to mass retailers. She established realistic core quality standards and had them ready.
“Companies are often resistant to change and stuck in their ways. I think by walking them through an actionable approach and the exact steps to move fast, retailers are able to take initiative to not run extremely large programs without a sustainability story. This has helped to retain business.”
Rasha went even deeper into this topic by introducing multiple certification programs including Oekotex 100 and Step certification options, Bluesign certification, Sustainable Fiber Certifications. She also implemented end of life solutions with Fabscrap.
Currently Rasha is actively a part of the Textile Exchange Hub. She consults on sustainable solutions. She has presented to executive board PowerPoints on what sustainability in the supply chain is and how to implement it. “I spoke at a world sustainable summit. This inspired a fast fashion blogger to interview me when the blogger realized that anyone could join this cause.” Rasha said. Rasha is continually developing her relationships with the raw materials and sustainability world and has the knowledge and passion to implement many positive changes financially and sustainably.
