Philip Fulmer was asked by the senior leadership of his company to participate in a small, five-person team for 14 months, to positively disrupt the status quo of the company’s operations and create a better environment.

Philip led the discussions and the group quickly converged on the subject of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as an area for disruption that would pay dividends to the company in several ways. A more diverse employee base would improve customer interaction, across all stages of the sales and marketing cycle, generate more innovative ideas, and would deliver messaging targeted for a variety of audiences, especially those beyond just a white male population.

However, Philip was provided no budget, and, by intentional design, none of the task force members had a background in human resources. To surmount these obstacles, the team launched several knowledge-gaining activities in parallel.

“This was an in-depth research project culminating in the analysis of data comparing the diversity demographics of my employer with their peers in the high-tech marketplace, their customers, especially in the aerospace and defense markets, and the overall population of the U.S. workforce.  The analysis showed that my employer had an opportunity to differentiate itself against the competition by leveraging the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workforce while also further solidifying the company’s reputation as a progressive thought leader,” Phillip said.

Philip’s analysis, combined with interviews from recognized Diversity and Inclusion leaders, was synthesized into a presentation to the C-suite executives. “ The executive team was compelled by the data integrated into the story to unanimously agree to fund a formal Diversity and Inclusion program. This further elevated the company’s commitment as a thought leader across all aspects of the business. This initiative also dramatically improved the company’s ability to recruit and retain high-performance talent,” Fulmer said.
