320 - Dr Josephine NguyenCDR / Dr. Josephine Nguyen commissioned in May 1999, graduating second in order of merit from the United States Naval Academy and attended medical school at Stanford School of Medicine. She completed a transitional internship at (then) National Naval Medical Center, went on to flight surgery training, followed by a flight surgery tour with the forward deployed Carrier Air Wing 5 in Atsugi, Japan where she received her Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer qualification. She then completed her dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania.

CDR Nguyen’s career has taken her to multiple areas of the U.S. continent. Upon completion of residency, she transferred to WRNMMC where she served as Assistant Program Director of Dermatology at WRNNMC and directed the Contact Dermatitis clinic and Phototherapy unit. In 2012, Dr. Nguyen was selected to serve as Director of Medical Student Accessions at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in Falls Church, VA. During her two year tenure as Board President of the Navy Scholarships for medical school, she developed a comprehensive, innovative, and cost- conscious HPSP selection process that could withstand IG inspections. In 2014, CDR Nguyen transferred to Naval Hospital Bremerton where she served as the Department Head of Dermatology at Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB), the Director of Telehealth for the hospital, Chair of the Healthcare Ethics Committee, and Wardroom Vice-President. She was the most productive Navy dermatologist from 2014 to 2016. In 2016, she was selected to be a Robert Wood Johnson health policy fellow and was subsequently transferred to Washington, D.C. to serve as the key physician advisor to the Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee, Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX-8). Following that, in 2017 she was transferred to CAPT James Lovell Federal Health Care Center, the nation’s only fully integrated DoD/VA health care facility. She initially served as the Assistant Director for Specialty Care, and was subsequently promoted twice: in 2018, she was promoted to the position of Associate Director for Specialty Care, and in 2019 she was promoted to Deputy Chief Medical Executive, where she currently maintains all hospital operations and clinical staff overseeing five clinical Directorates/Directors and 1,140 staff.

CDR Nguyen received a Masters in the Science of Healthcare Delivery from Dartmouth University in 2016 and will complete a two year Wharton Executive Education Program in February 2019. In 2018, CDR Nguyen received the “Senior Navy Female Physician Award,” which recognized the impact of her work in military medicine as well as organized medicine in the U.S. She is a nationally recognized leader, holding leadership positions in her specialty society as well as the American Medical Association. In 2019, she was selected to be the Navy Surgeon General’s Dermatology consultant. Her special interests are leadership development, teaching, humanitarian aid, health care legislature, mentoring of students, and increasing female physician recruitment and retention in the military through mentoring. She has a tireless commitment to physical fitness, continuing her record of perfect scores on the biannual Navy physical fitness tests.

Her personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal (1), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals (3), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2).
