A leading university in Peru was considering shutting down its master’s Program in Economics due to lack of profitability and low
enrollment. Dr. Mendoza was hired as Director of the Program with the expectation that he would lead the transition into the shutdown. However, Dr. Mendoza decided that closing the program was not the right decision as there was plenty of growth potential for it and there
was room to increase enrollment and revenue and decrease costs. Thus, recognizing the value opportunity, Dr. Mendoza persuaded senior leadership in the university to overhaul the program.
“I faced much resistance among faculty and other stakeholders to implement changes to the program. Some of these changes included reformatting the course structure, shifting the program language from Spanish to English, hiring faculty in the US and Europe to teach short courses, a marketing strategy based on analytics and data science algorithms, as well as a reduction in the workforce and the compensation structure.”
Dr. Mendoza successfully implemented these changes as well as other cost-cutting initiatives. After three years, the changes resulted in a $3.5 million profit growth and a 35% EBITDA while enrollment increased by more than 50%.
