Christopher Meyer guided Kohl’s executive team to become a leader in the mattress and bedding industry. He was working as the VP of Global Sales and Marketing for Trans World Marketing and services a client he had prospected, Serta. As an executive at the full service promotional and marketing firm with design and manufacturing, he had the unique opportunity to become a vital lynch pin between retailers and consumer product clients.  

This was the case with Kohl’s and Sleep Innovations. During two separate meetings Christopher learned from Serta they were seeking a new channel for their mattress-in-a-box product line. He had been in strategy meetings a week earlier as Kohl’s discussed ways to become a force within the bedding industry

He connected the dots and began working on a pitch to share with both the Kohl’s and Serta leadership teams. To Chris, concept was simple. “Develop an end-cap that would be branded with Serta and offer a chance for Kohl’s consumers to interact with the new Mattress in a box product. Next to the bed testing end-cap I positioned an information and ordering kiosk. The mattress could be purchased within the store and then shipped directly from the Serta Distribution centers, said Meyers.”

This program approach solved two existing hurdles. First, the limited available space inside the Kohl’s store to sell a mattress line and, second, the need to develop an on-demand delivery service. Serta already had this in place with the bed in a box product line.  

“It was a win-win. We tested the concept in 10 stores. It was a huge hit with Kohl’s customers. We then received an order to produce 1100 interactive end caps at $2,650 per unit, a PO just under 3 million. The financial outcome for Kohl’s and Serta was a program that grossed $58 million in annual sales with a successful running rate for 7 consecutive years, and the plus for Trans World was two super happy clients and a 3 million dollar order every 18 months,” Meyer said.
