When Casey Isaac was asked by one of his former employers to help build a new company and be one of the founders of HealthFund Solutions, he was excited to be a part of another start-up company. In the beginning it was a lot of strategy planning, understanding the fundamentals of the business and what will set us apart from no one else. Casey had ideas that would make this company a sole proprietor by using B2B communication technology and understanding what new product development will be needed. Once that foundation was set and understood, it was time to build our systems.

Casey started with the infrastructure and wanted to have all the servers in a VM cloud solution. This decision, as minor as it may sound, would have long-term implications to consider. Casey chose to go with a Microsoft based environment because he was planning to have other systems that are Microsoft based. Knowing this, Casey went with an Azure cloud-based system and wanted to add an external firewall solution using Barracuda firewall. Once this environment was complete it was time to start thinking about what database systems will he be using.

On the database front, Casey chose to work with a hybrid solution using SQL as the backend and using FileMaker as the frontend. The reason he chose to use a SQL backend was based on the fact that SQL is very powerful with large datasets and the reason he decided to use FileMaker on the frontend was it is easy to scale for the size that the company was going to be in the first 5 years. Even though he knew that FileMaker wouldn’t be the long-term solution, he knew it would be the most beneficial at this moment in time. This solution has served the company well and has been very successful in terms of the company’s growth.

Next steps were deciding on the system that would play the part of the systems rule engine. This system would be responsible for all the business rules from operations to data files management, and EDI production. Casey wanted to choose something that would be scalable for a long-term plan. Casey chose to use Node as the solution to manage these functions. Having Node manage these processes was very productive for the company, allowing the SFTP/API communication to be managed from file transfers with the clients and from the clearinghouses that he was trading partners with. Not every client has the same services offered to them so having the business rules managed here was an ideal solution since Node was already managing the file management aspect. This allowed a seamless flow of data to our backend solution (SQL) that allowed SQL to feed the frontend solution (FileMaker). The end users didn’t have to worry about the processes just that when they used FileMaker, their new accounts were there ready for them to work.

In conclusion, this system design for HealthFund Solution provided a solid foundation for the company and allowed them to build at will when it came to the business needs. Having this hybrid solution gave the company some self-proprietary software that made them instantly more marketable and unique in the industry. Adding value to the company as well as serving as a workable environment that empowered the team to use technology to lead operational success. This also allowed the company to go after bigger clients because the systems were set up in a way that those clients’ system auditors felt was non-threatening when adding to their networks. Also putting the company in a position to add policies that met the industry requirements when it came to HIPAA, SOC, and HITEC needs. The company benefited from this system design propelling the growth that led the company from 0 EBITDA to over 5 million EBITDA in the first 5 years of being in business. Casey produced a ROI Start-up success story with HealthFund Solutions.
