Alyson Woodard was promoted to run the 3rd largest consumer market in the AT&T portfolio managing a $4.3B P&L budget, 300+ company owned as well as franchise retail stores and managing a 1200+ team of frontline employees. Alyson was tasked to quickly uncover root causes of market share erosion, stabilize the decline and return the market to growth mode.

Alyson inherited a top-down and hierarchical operating culture with a stifling environment where leaders were operating out of fear of driving numbers. Navigating a closed-off leadership team with a lack of trust that permeated throughout the organization, Alyson immediately immersed herself into field visits throughout the market to get to know the extended team.  

“I conducted a series of Town Hall, local breakfast meetings and numerous store visits, and much more, and I quickly identified there was no guiding light for the team,” said Woodard.  She led her team through a major transformation that included a full re-brand of the market to aid in employee pride and engagement, an overhaul of metrics to simplify the focus of the field leaders, creation and execution of multiple employee development programs and began tracking and communicating key wins to the team to maintain momentum.  

As with any major Fortune 10 company, nothing happens in a vacuum. Alyson quickly identified partner organizations where key relationships were non-existent or had not been fostered. She expanded her team’s efforts to include all relevant partner organizations (Finance, HR, Network, Legal, Franchise Owners, HQ Marketing and Sales Operations, etc.)  

Truly having developed an inclusive and collaborative leadership team, the results quickly followed. In under six months in the role, Alyson returned the market to growth mode for the first time since 2013, growing revenue by more than $52M YoY and resulting in a move from 16th (out of 17) to a top three market position within AT&T.
