In this current age of digital connectivity, the concept of effective professional networking has evolved into something more attainable than it was a generation ago. Whereas unadvertised jobs were once only available through direct word-of-mouth connections, job fairs, or professional recruiters, it is now possible to connect with individuals in any industry across the world, growing networks with numbers possibly running into the millions.

In theory, it would therefore seem that this evolution has made it easier for job-seekers to access the “hidden job market” orBusinessman shadow in office jobs that are not posted on public forums. However, this may not always be the case since social media forums are now overflowing with ambitious candidates looking for their next professional endeavor. Job-seekers now have to work even harder to be seen.

This poses the question; how can job-seekers network effectively to locate viable unadvertised jobs while standing out from their competitors?

Before reaching out, it’s important for job-seekers to establish a strong online profile through a professional website or blog that will stand out to potential employers. Researching companies of interest and reaching out directly to associated hiring managers can uncover unadvertised job opportunities that are best suited to them individually.

Entrepreneur and Chair/Founder of the multi-million-dollar e-commerce platform, CleanItSupply.com, Dan Dillon, provides further insight from an employer’s perspective. He encourages candidates to work on fully expanding and utilizing their professional and personal network, attend industry events whenever possible, and engage directly with potential employers on platforms like LinkedIn.

“When approaching organizations about unadvertised positions,” says Dillon, “it is important to exude confidence and determination. Begin with an intent-driven outreach communication expressing interest in their work. For instance, discuss how your skill sets align with the company’s mission or highlight pertinent experience that would add value to their team. Maintain a regular follow up, but remember – persistence is the key, not nuisance.”

Steve Mostyn, Chief Human Resources Director at Management.org, offers additional advice to job-seekers who are specifically seeking to stand out from the crowd. “Craft a concise, compelling pitch highlighting your unique value and how it aligns with the company’s goals. Reach out through a warm connection if possible, or directly to a hiring manager or relevant department head. Be clear about what you can bring to the table and express genuine interest in the company.”

It is important for job-seekers to be proactive, persistent, and strategic in their approach to accessing the hidden job market. Job-seekers who differentiate themselves by networking in a meaningful way, building relationships within their industry of choice, as well as demonstrating a strong work ethic and positive attitude during meetings and correspondences will have a better chance of landing an interview.
