Almost daily, I speak with job seekers who tell me that they have an ok or good resume. It\u2019s an age-old story. They keep submitting it and getting poor responses. Sometimes their strategy is poorly defined, and they either hear nothing or keep getting requests to sell life insurance (no disrespect intended to this wonderful and necessary industry).\u00a0 So, I decided to ask a resume writer I respect, Laura Slawson, to share her thoughts with me on this critical subject area.<\/p>\n

Anyone can <\/em>write a resume, but to craft a polished document that gets you noticed, gets your phone to ring and is directed to your future boss with the goal of landing an interview \u2026 think again!,\u201d Laura said.<\/p>\n

Certification<\/h3>\n

She went further by telling me that, \u201ccertification is essential!\u201d \u00a0\u201cCertification shows your writer has invested time in extensive training, passed rigorous writing and grammar exams and has powerful tools to convey your unique career story. For certifications such as a Certified Expert Resume Writer and Master Resume Writer, years of professional paid experience must be documented, proof of your ability to strategically focus each resume on a client\u2019s objectives and a detailed resume portfolio with samples are judged and graded. Some key certifications you can rely on are: CPRW (Certified Professional Resume Writer), CERW (Certified Expert Resume Writer), Master Resume Writer (MRW) and Nationally Certified Resume Writer (NCRW).<\/p>\n

How do I select a professional resume writer? What should I look for?<\/h3>\n

A good rule of thumb is to look at your writer\u2019s website or LinkedIn Profile, is the writing compelling? Does it make you want to call them? If so, this is the type of writing you can expect. Connect with a few writers to see if you\u2019re comfortable with them. Do they listen to you and ask insightful questions or do they rush you off the phone? Do they only talk about price? Look for compatibility, integrity, likeability, helpfulness, comfort, and transparency. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions about qualifications, years in business, and client testimonials.<\/p>\n

Processes and procedures<\/h3>\n

Make sure you are comfortable with the process. Some writers use questionnaires, consultations, job postings and performance reviews. Some resume writers who are also career coaches, prefer detailed interviews and consultations. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask \u2026 How many revisions are included? When can you expect your first draft? How are the final documents sent? How is payment made? Most importantly, will they work with you to guarantee your delight with the final copy?\u201d<\/p>\n

Last steps<\/h3>\n

Laura and I discussed the many resume writing \u201cmills\u201d (perish the thought) and people who claim to be resume writers with no certifications. Laura said, \u201ccarefully evaluate (multiple) resume writing services before selecting your personal writer. And remember \u2026 you get what you pay for! If someone is offering you the $99 special and a guarantee you will get hired, they are probably not the writer for you.\u201d My comment on that is this. Run away as fast as you can<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Can anyone write a resume? Sure, but when you work with a certified professional, rest assured you will be working with \u201cthe best of the best!\u201d<\/p>\n
