Clayton Huber, the General Manager of Commercial Plumbing and HVAC at a pump manufacturer, was tasked with finding a way to lower the cost of making base plates. The following is his experience and the outcome that ensued:
“Success of adding automation to some of the welding processes relied on standardizing the design of primary components to ensure purchase of the proper robotic equipment. Accomplishing the complex goals required reallocating the time, focus, and dedication of professional staff already busy with traditional duties.
“I enlisted the aid of senior management in endorsing the project charter which served to clearly indicate the importance of the effort and the company’s commitment to on-time fulfillment. Next, I framed Gantt charts that clarified the completion schedule, convincing all participants to sign on to achieving the milestones. I then prepared a contingency plan for increasing labor resources if the need arose. To follow up, I held frequent meetings to analyze potential delays and possible remedies, assess the impact of constrained engineering time on regular production, and evaluate requests to increase the worker pool.
“Managing the project by first gaining group dedication to success bound the team together in mutual dedication to the objectives, and generated a $350,000 annual production-cost savings.”
